KOTOR: The Revan Reveal and the Greatest Twist in Star Wars

Knights of the Old Republic’s central twist — that the player character is Darth Revan, the Sith Lord they have been hunting, with their memory wiped and identity replaced by the Jedi Council — is the most effective player-character reveal in any RPG. The game is built so that every character trait the player assigned to their character during creation is consistent with a person who was once the most powerful Sith in the galaxy.

The reveal’s effectiveness depends on the game’s opening act thoroughly establishing that the protagonist is an amnesiac soldier on a Republic vessel. Carth’s suspicions seem like paranoia. Bastila’s discomfort around the protagonist seems like Jedi reserve. In retrospect, everyone who knows the truth has been behaving consistently with that knowledge throughout.

The alignment system — Light Side or Dark Side — acquires additional meaning after the reveal. A character choosing the Light Side is Revan refusing to be who they were. A character choosing the Dark Side is Revan acknowledging what they are. Both paths are coherent biographies; neither is more ‘correct’ in narrative terms.

BioWare Edmonton designed KOTOR knowing the reveal had to survive a second playthrough. The Star Map locations, the Sith Academy’s recognition, the Rakatan elder’s reaction to Revan’s name — all of it is consistent with both the pre-reveal and post-reveal understanding of the protagonist. The twist is a key that unlocks the whole game simultaneously.

The level of craft hidden in the background of this game is genuinely moving. They made it for someone.
