Elden Ring: How to Reach Miquella’s Haligtree — The Most Hidden Area in the Game

Miquella’s Haligtree is the most elaborately hidden area in Elden Ring — a secret region requiring two item halves, a hidden lift, and a puzzle that most players never solve without a guide.

What Is the Haligtree?

A colossal, ancient tree grown by the demigod Miquella as a refuge from the influence of the Erdtree. The area is stunning — sprawling branches, golden fauna, ruined castles hanging in the canopy — and home to some of the most punishing enemies in the game. It culminates in a fight against Malenia, Blade of Miquella, widely considered the hardest boss in FromSoftware history.

Step 1: The Haligtree Secret Medallion

The lift to the Haligtree requires a special two-piece medallion:

  • Right Half: Given by Albus, an old man disguised as a pot in the Village of the Albinaurics in Liurnia. You must hit him to reveal him.
  • Left Half: Located in Castle Sol at the northern end of the Mountaintops of the Giants — a late-game area behind a Stonesword Key fog gate, guarded by Commander Niall.

Step 2: The Hidden Lift

Travel to the Grand Lift of Rold. Instead of using the standard Rold Medallion, select “Hoist Secret Medallion” from your inventory. The lift will take you to Consecrated Snowfield — a blizzard-covered hidden region not shown on most maps.

Step 3: Finding the Entrance

Traverse the Consecrated Snowfield through whiteout blizzard conditions to reach Ordina, Liturgical Town. Solve the candle-lighting puzzle (entering a ghostly evergaol to light four statues while being hunted by invisible assassins). This opens the portal to the Haligtree itself.

Malenia

At the base of the Haligtree waits Malenia. She has two phases, heals on every hit — even blocked hits — and her second phase opens with a dive-bomb attack that kills most players instantly. She is entirely optional. She is also entirely unforgettable.

Statistics suggest fewer than 30% of Elden Ring players ever reach the Haligtree. Fewer still defeat Malenia on their first playthrough.

  1. Malenia healing on every hit including blocks is the kind of design decision that sounds insane on paper and feels even more insane in the arena. Phase 2 dive bomb on the first attempt ends so many runs. Best boss in the game though.

  2. Fewer than 30% of players ever reach the Haligtree and I believe it. The medallion hunt is obscure enough that most players never trigger it organically. Albus hiding in a pot is such a FromSoftware NPC introduction.

The Ordina candle puzzle while invisible assassins hunt you is one of the most stressful sequences in the whole game. The game gives you no warning. You activate the evergaol and suddenly something is trying to kill you and you can’t see it.
