Celeste: Chapter 9 and the Mountain’s Last Word

Celeste Chapter 9 — Farewell, a free DLC update — is mechanically the hardest content in the game and narratively its clearest statement: Madeline returns to the mountain after Grandma’s death to retrieve a cassette tape. The chapter is about grief and the impulse to find resolution in a place that offered transformation before.

Madeline finds no resolution. The cassette tape connects to Grandma’s voice, the chapter’s final area is a corridor lined with the visual motifs of every previous chapter, and the ending is not a return to the mountain’s summit but a different kind of arrival — not at a place but at a state.

Matt Thorson and Amora Torrie built Chapter 9 after the game was complete, funded entirely by player goodwill, and distributed for free. The chapter acknowledges this explicitly in its credits scroll: a statement that the mountain’s story was only possible because of the players who made the original game’s journey meaningful.

Farewell is the only piece of DLC in mainstream gaming history that includes an explicit gratitude statement in its credits, specifically for the players who found meaning in the base game’s story about mental health.

  1. The attention to detail the developers put into this is insane. Most players will never see it but it makes the world feel so much richer.
