Civilization VI: The Barbarian Camps and Clifford the Clown

Civilization VI’s barbarian camp system includes a detail visible only at high zoom levels: individual barbarian units, if selected and zoomed to maximum camera depth, have unique physical models with slight variations between units — one barbarian leader model in the early Barbarian Clans mode has a face paint pattern that closely resembles a painted clown design.

Firaxis artists have confirmed in GDC talks that unit models at maximum zoom contain intentional detail work that is never visible at typical play zoom, including facial expressions, equipment wear patterns, and occasionally tribute designs inserted by individual artists.

The clown-faced barbarian leader is attributed to a specific Firaxis animator in a developers commentary track available in the civilopedia, accessible only by navigating to the barbarian faction entry and activating a non-documented interaction with the faction banner. The commentary plays for 45 seconds and ends with the animator signing off by name.

Civilization’s information density at normal play zoom hides a layer of physical artistry that most players see only as coloured tokens on a board.

  1. The attention to detail the developers put into this is insane. Most players will never see it but it makes the world feel so much richer.
