Dark Souls: The Painted World and What Crossbreed Priscilla Chose

The Painted World of Ariamis is an optional area in Dark Souls accessible only by picking up a doll that most players walk past without examining. The area itself — a frozen castle full of hostile undead — ends at a fog gate concealing Crossbreed Priscilla, one of the few bosses in the game who asks you to leave instead of attacking.

Priscilla is half-dragon, half-human, and was placed in the Painted World by Gwynevere — essentially imprisoned there because her existence was considered an abomination. She has made the painted world her home and harmed no one. She explicitly says ‘it is not too late to leave’ when you enter.

Killing her is optional. Leaving is the intended path for players who listen. Her boss reward — the Lifehunt Scythe — is only obtainable by killing her, which means players who chose mercy miss a weapon permanently.

FromSoftware designed Priscilla as a test of the player’s assumption that every boss must be defeated. Most players who reach her kill her out of habit. Her dialogue plays regardless — she thanks you for your mercy even as she dies. The game never judges the choice; it simply remembers it.

This is why I always check every corner. You never know what’s been left for the observant player.
