RE2 Remake includes two bonus scenarios unlocked after completing both Leon and Claire routes — The 4th Survivor, featuring Hunk’s extraction run through the RPD, and The Tofu Survivor, featuring a literal block of tofu navigating the same route armed only with knives.
Hunk’s route is a survival gauntlet with no checkpoints, limited resources, and an optimised path that requires knowledge of enemy positions earned from the main game. It is the most mechanically demanding content in the remake. A perfect run takes under fifteen minutes; most first attempts take hours.
Tofu is an easter egg originally present in the 1998 original Resident Evil 2 — a secret character from Capcom’s hitbox testing process who became a recurring joke across the series. The Remake includes not just Tofu but six additional Tofu variants — Taffy, Cupcake, Flan, Cheddar Bob, Robert Kendo — each with different weapon loadouts and slightly different stats.
The unlock condition for all Tofu variants requires completing the base Tofu scenario multiple times on increasing difficulty, with each completion unlocking the next variant. Capcom hid seven distinct playable characters inside a joke mode — each one harder than the last, each one a block of food wearing a gas mask, none of them explained within any narrative framework.
The amount of craft that went into hiding this detail is remarkable. Pure game design artistry.
