Castle Dimitrescu is the first major area of Resident Evil Village and the game’s most discussed environment — a Gothic castle maintained by the towering Lady Alcina Dimitrescu and her three daughters, Bela, Cassandra, and Daniela. The daughters are essentially immortal under standard conditions: they dissolve into swarms of insects and reform.
The mechanism of their immortality is explained in documents found throughout the castle: the daughters were modified by Cadou parasites, which also provide their insect bodies. The parasites cannot survive cold. Each daughter must be led to a cold room to be vulnerable — a weakness the castle has no reason to advertise but which the architecture implies if you examine ventilation patterns.
Lady Dimitrescu’s backstory is available through her personal journals, which reveal she was a host-sacrifice for Miranda before becoming a beneficiary of the same Cadou process. Her diaries describe a transformation she experienced as both loss and empowerment. The entries covering her daughters are the most emotionally complex writing in the game: a mother who loves what her daughters are and grieves what they can never be.
The fourth daughter — implied in Miranda’s notes but never appearing in the game — was killed during an early experiment. Dimitrescu’s entry on that subject is three words followed by a blank page. Village is one of the few horror games that successfully generates grief for monsters.

The level of craft hidden in the background of this game is genuinely moving. They made it for someone.
Didn’t realise how much was hidden under the surface. Makes me want to replay it with fresh eyes.
