Subnautica contains a rescue mission that is designed to fail. The Sunbeam — a ship responding to the player’s distress signal — announces its inbound approach with a radio message, gives a landing time, and requires the player to travel to a specific island to meet it.
When the player arrives at the island, a Precursor cannon fires automatically and destroys the Sunbeam. The player cannot intervene, cannot warn the crew, and cannot disable the cannon before the mission triggers regardless of when they arrive. The destruction is scripted.
What Subnautica’s players discovered: the cannon has a power source — the Quarantine Enforcement Platform requires Precursor energy to function. If you have already deactivated the Platform’s power before the Sunbeam arrives, the cannon fires but produces no beam. The Sunbeam survives the shot, receives no signal, and eventually departs without landing, leaving a different radio message about signal loss.
The game never tells you the cannon can be deactivated. It never suggests that arriving early at the island matters. The Sunbeam’s survival is a secret that requires understanding the world’s mechanical logic rather than following the story’s apparent structure.
